Moving Forward

What an awesome time we had in the presence of the Lord and His saints this past Friday evening! If you were there, you can testify that we took some steps forward by the close of the service. If you were not there, you missed something grand and glorious as the spirit of the Lord was very evident.

Pastor Blankenship was with us as our guest speaker and did a fantastic job preaching the Word of God. We are grateful to those who joined us and look forward to being together in Bible Study on Tuesday evening at 7:30 P.M. in room #240 of the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center.

A New Day

The sun is rising in Abingdon, VA. Whatever happened yesterday; forget it. The past is the past. God’s mercies are new every morning. You can begin again. Apostle Paul spoke of forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before (Phil. 3:13). That’s good advice for us as well.

Dawn Abingdon

Now is an opportunity to start over. You may have made mistakes. Others may have wronged you. Whatever the case, something tells me this is a good time to put it behind you and allow God to help you move forward.

Why don’t you close the chapter? Turn the page. This is your day. Don’t miss it!

Join us for a visit at your earliest convenience. Please check the Events page and come see us. You will be glad you did and we will too!

Give the World a Smile!

smiley face

“When you see a person without a smile give him yours.” – Zig Ziglar

Have you noticed the lack of smiles on faces in the crowd? No doubt it is due in part to the pressures of the day; the daily “grind of life.” People are facing an enormous amount of pressure in our society. According to an article in USA Today, 35% of Americans say their stress level increased in the past year. There are many factors contributing to this situation. It can be caused from financial, relational, or familial problems as well as a multiplicity of other dilemmas.

People are unhappy with their present situation and often resorting to a myriad of supposed remedies for their problems. They sometimes try everything from changing jobs to changing spouses. They often experiment with alcohol and drugs or simply busy themselves with activities that leave them empty and longing for more.

Sadly, there are also those who have tried religion with it leaving them no less fulfilled. They found religion when what they really needed was relationship. Innate within the soul of every man, woman, boy, and girl is a void that only its maker can fill. Once that emptiness has been inhabited, the individual will know a satisfaction like none other. Scripture refers to it as joy that is “unspeakable” (1 Pet. 1:8). There are simply no words adequate to explain this joy. If you have not experienced this kind of happiness, we invite you to join us to find out more. Please check the Events page to view meeting times and locations.

I leave you with a simple experiment to try. As you go amidst the furrowed brows and frowns, just offer them the rarity of a contagious smile. It will be a welcome sight and one that will likely be returned. A smile alone can make quite a difference!

….”happy is that people whose God is the Lord.” – Ps. 144:15

I’m Excited!

Man Jumping for Joy

We’re gonna have Bible study Tuesday at 7:30 P.M. Join us in room 240 of the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center as we open our hearts, our minds, and our Bibles. We can hardly wait to see you there!

Disclaimer: We don’t know who the guy in the photo is. He unknowingly and probably unwillingly posed to display how we feel about Tuesday’s Bible study.

Going Old School

Old School

The Abingdon Bible Study Group is going old school for the next couple of weeks. Though the facilities are state of the art, high-tech, and comfortable, the lessons will be a dig into the past. We will be rediscovering the teachings of the early church. We will take a look back at the doctrine and practices of the New Testament church and see how we compare. It will be enlightening and refreshing to see that we can experience what the early church did.

You won’t need to come early to stoke the fire (though we hope to do that within each of our hearts), it will be warm inside the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. You won’t have to walk 2 miles in snow that’s two feet deep with shoes that have cardboard stuffed in the soles (you can give us a call & we’ll arrange a ride for you).

It’s going to be exciting! While you don’t have to come early to warm the building, you’re welcome to slip in a few minutes early and enjoy the warmth of friendly fellowship. We will have some light refreshments to offer you before the session starts. Make plans now to join us!

By the way…… We will probably be going “old school” for more than a couple of weeks.

“Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.” – Jeremiah 6:16

Room Change

Room 240 SWVHECWe will be enjoying Bible study in a new room Tuesday night. Room 240 is where you can join us at 7:30 P.M. The design of this room should be well suited for Bible study. It is a tiered, u-shaped room which should work great.Though it is on the second floor, it will be on the same end of the building that we are accustomed to. There is also an elevator near the center of the building if you should need it.

Please bring your notes from last week. If this is your first time to join us we will have a handout with notes for you to follow along. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow night!

B.Y.O.C.

(Bring Your Own Coffee)

Don’t let the cold temperatures cause you to stay inside and get cabin fever. We welcome you to join us in a warm environment amongst warm fellowship enjoy the Word of God together. We will meet tonight in room #149 of the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center beginning at 7:30 P.M.Coffee and Jesus

The location is close to the interstate, the parking is plenteous and in close proximity to the room, the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, and the presence of God is evident. We will save you a seat!

And…. yes, you can bring coffee or hot chocolate if you want!

Koinonia

It’s a strange sounding word, but it’s what is happening on Tuesday nights in Abingdon. If you’ve never experienced koinonia you are missing out. It is translated “fellowship” in Acts 2:42 “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” The word means community, joint participation, association, and fellowship.

While there are many groups and associations one can be a part of, there’s nothing quite like the union we share in Christ as His body. It fulfills a need that we have innate within us as human beings. We were created for community and more importantly; communion in Christ.

Though it has been some days now since our last Tuesday night Bible study, I can still recollect what a wonderful experience it was! There was an awesome presence of God with us and the effects of that evening have been lasting.

We invite you to join us on Tuesday and experience this unique fellowship for yourself. You will find a group of people that will make you feel at ease as we examine the Scriptures together. Please join us. We will be looking for you!

Vision Night

Beautiful-Happy-New-Year-2014-HD-Wallpapers-by-techblogstop-17-1024x574

Scripture declares in Proverbs 29:18; “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” It’s good to know that God does not leave us fumbling in the dark. He has a plan; a certain direction for our lives.

As we are approaching a new year, we do not want to wonder aimlessly through the maze of life without a plan. It is with this thought in mind that we intend to discuss a direction for our group this coming Thursday night. If you are interested in knowing more about us and possibly being involved in what God is involved in, we invite you to join us for “Vision Night.” We will be meeting in room 149 of the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center at 7:30 P.M. Please join us!
