There Is Hope

Hope (Come Hope With Us)

Job 14:7-9
7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

Hope has been defined as the longing or desire for something accompanied by the belief in the possibility of its occurrence. Hope is a powerful force in our lives. Hope will carry you when you don’t have anything else. It will sustain you through the storms of life. Hope will cause people to take dreadful treatments for terminal medical conditions, in hope that they will get better. Hope causes some to stay in relationships that are less than desirable, believing that things will improve in time.

Winston Churchill was once asked by a reporter what his country’s greatest weapon was against Hitler’s Nazi regime. Without pausing for a moment, he said: “It is what England’s greatest weapon has always been – Hope.” Hope is a powerful weapon for you today as well.

We have been studying about Abraham and Scripture says of him; “Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be (Rom. 4:18). When it looks impossible, don’t give up on hope. When the odds are against you, hold on to hope.

In our Scripture setting, Job was in a tough situation. A situation that looked hopeless. He uses a tree to illustrate his point and says in essence; Even a tree that’s been cut down has hope. He awakens that hope a few verses later when he says; “If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come (Job 14:14). His change did come too. Did he ever more see hope realized in Job chapter 42. Read the chapter again and see if it doesn’t give you hope. The book of Job is becoming one of my favorite books and it’s mainly because of the final chapter. I love good endings. (You can have one too!).

The Bible has much to say about hope. As a matter of fact, the Bible is a book of hope. Romans 15:4 states it on this wise; “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” The comfort of the Scriptures gives us hope.

Here are some other Bible verses dealing with hope:
1. A good hope (2 Thessalonians 2:16).
2. A blessed hope (Titus 2:13).
3. A joyful hope (Hebrews 3:6; Romans 5:3).
4. A sure, firm hope (Hebrews 6:18).
5. A living or lively hope (1 Peter 1:3).
6. A saving hope (Romans 8:24).
7. A glorious hope (Colossians 1:27).
8. A purifying hope (1 John 3:3).

Allow me to encourage you today to put your hope in God. Read the verses below that give the same advice:

  • Psalms 42:11
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
  • Psalms 78:7
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
