smile-its-contagious-nestleRecently I seen this slogan on a bottle of Nestle water and it captured my attention. The slogan said simply; “Smile, It’s Contagious.” I was reminded of an experiment I tried and so I challenged others to do the same. I walked through a crowd and was certain to make eye contact with folks that I encountered and politely smiled at them. Most, if not all, smiled right back at me.

Someone said, “You catch an attitude just like you catch a cold; by getting close to it.”  As Christians, we need to have a positive effect on folks. Sad to say, I’ve seen too many walking around looking like they had been sucking on sour lemons. We’ve all witnessed people who were suppose to be children of God acting anything but. Admittedly, we all have had days when we should have remained isolated for fear of giving others the attitude we had (at least until we “prayed through”).

In this cold, cruel world that we live in, people need to encounter a pleasant attitude when they meet us. If we’re not careful, we can allow the pressures of life and mere busyness to distract us from making  a positive impression on people. Remember, regardless of what may be going on in our lives on a particular day should not keep us from being Christians.

What kind of image are we presenting to those around us? Are we having a positive impact on their lives? Are we lifting them to a higher level or coming down to theirs?

We have so much to be happy about! If you are saved and on your way to heaven, that’s worth celebrating. If you’re living a life free from the bondage of sin, that’s reason for rejoicing. That bottle of Nestle also said; “Pure Life.” There’s something about a pure life that should cause one to be happy.

I recall a quote I heard as a young man that said, “If you’re happy, notify your face.” It could also be stated, “If you’re saved, notify your face.” That’s plainly spoken I understand, but sometimes we all need to be reminded that we’ve got so much to be happy about. We also need to be cognizant of the fact that others are watching and they may need that smile you have to offer them.

I leave you with a couple of Scriptures for your consideration:

“Happy is that people, whose God is the Lord.” – Psalm 144:15

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” – Proverbs 17:22
