Holding a HandLook not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
– Philippians 2:4

Others – It is our theme for the month of June, but as June closes out may we remember it’s a theme to live by. Jesus lived His life for others. Jesus gave His life for others. Romans 15:1-3 (a) says “We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. 3 For even Christ pleased not himself;

Although we live in a very self-centered society, the Scripture makes it clear that we are not of this world (John 15:19, John 17:16, 1 John 2:15). We must be about our Father’s business and He is in the people business. Someone has said that we need to get close enough to God to hear His heartbeat and His heartbeat is people. I’ve heard folks say “I am not a people person.” As children of God, you need to be; I need to be a “people person.”

The Bible says in James 1:27 “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”  If I could say it this way in focusing on the first portion of this verse; pure religion is about others.

The book of 1 Corinthians is known as the “love chapter” in your Bible. It is dealing with charity and says it “seeketh not her own” (1 Cor. 13:5). True love is not self-serving. True love gives. God so loved that He gave (John 3:16).

Let’s just cut to the chase. What can you do this week to focus on others? Do you know someone who is lonely that may enjoy a brief visit? Is there someone you know who is really going through a difficult time? A “Thinking of You” card may cheer them up. A phone call or text may encourage and strengthen them. What about showing some attention to the following: The elderly, the widow, the widower, the backslider, the child whose parents split up. These are just a few ideas to help get your mind working. Pray about it. Ask God to help you to touch a life for His cause. You are His hands and feet.

Let me also challenge you to read the following Scriptures in your personal devotion time and allow God to speak to you through His Word:

  • Matthew 25:35-40
  • Mark 10:44-45
  • Matthew 23:11-12
  • Matthew 25:21
  • Luke 19:10

Don’t allow me to hold you up any longer. Let’s get with it. Focus on the Scriptures in this post and let God speak to you. Write a list of folks you need to reach out to. Accept the challenge to get our focus off of ourselves and on others. Begin today!

Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile. ~ Albert Einstein
