I once heard a veteran home missionary tell about his early experiences of starting a new church. He told of his daughter illustrating the children’s finger rhyme “Here’s the church, here’s the steeple. Open the doors and see all the people.” The innocent child however, gave her own rendition of it as she saw it from her viewpoint. He overheard her as she was saying and displaying; “Here’s the church, and here’s the steeple. Open the doors and there are NO PEOPLE.” That’s been many years now and thankfully that can no longer be said of that assembly as it is a full house and has started other branch works.
While that’s quite the norm when beginning a church, it is not the will of God to remain that way. Jesus said in the Parable of the Great Supper; “Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled” (Luke 14:23 KJV).
As we are in the early stages of planting a church in the beautiful city of Abingdon, we are thankful that we have been blessed with a core group of folks who have committed themselves to faithful church attendance, but there is certainly room for more attendees in the confines of the “house” where we meet and we want to fill it up. Will you do your part this coming Sunday by filling your chair while inviting someone else to fill the one next to you?
Check the Events tab at the top of the page for location and time. Come and bring a friend to help us as we fill the house!
