Let Brotherly Love Continue

Boys at DaytonaBeing the father of twin boys, I am learning a great deal about brothers. Brothers disagree, brothers even fight. Brothers battle jealousy. Brothers sometimes talk about each other. Believe it or not, I’ve even known of them to try to get each other in trouble. These are things that brothers do. It’s not right and we are constantly trying to work on these areas in their lives to help shape their character, but nonetheless it’s what brothers do.

That’s not all brothers do, however. Brothers love. They fight, but no one better fight the one that even they can’t seem to be able to tolerate. They defend each other. They come to one another’s rescue. They laugh together. They cry when the other one is hurt. They pray for one another. They don’t like being away from each other for too long.

Hebrews 3:1 says “let brotherly love continue.” The Bible is also very clear when it poses the rhetorical question; “He that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? (1 John 4:20) We have spent much time in our teaching sessions concerning having right relationships with fellow man and won’t take the time to repeat that here today. Suffice it to say however, that we cannot assume to have a right relationship with God while treating others in a way that displeases Him. I will leave you with a few Scriptures to ponder during your own personal devotion time concerning the topic at hand:
Matt. 22:37-39
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Rom. 12:9-10
9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

1 John 4:7-8
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

John 13:35
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
John 15:12-13
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

With that said, let’s continue to work on relationships with people. It matters to God and should matter to us. This world needs to see and experience real love. Let brotherly love continue!
